About The Smoking and Health Action Coalition -
Monroe County (SHAC)

The Smoking and Health Action Coalition - Monroe County (SHAC) is a community partnership whose goals are to engage local stakeholders, educate community leaders and the public, mobilize the community to strengthen tobacco-related policies to restrict the use, availability and promotion of tobacco products and limit opportunities for exposure to secondhand smoke.

SHAC works with local businesses, employers, community leaders, work places, health care institutions, providers, and community groups to implement effective tobacco control policies. This includes changing public opinions about tobacco and tobacco use, reducing or eliminating tobacco advertising and promotion and promoting access to cessation services for those who desire assistance to stop smoking.

SHAC has been successful in promoting initiatives to strengthen clean indoor air laws, product placement laws, tobacco advertising restrictions and youth access laws and penalties. SHAC has implemented multi-media campaigns, attended community events and other activities to inform, educate, engage and empower the general population in order to decrease the social acceptability of tobacco use.
